Witnesses-what do you do?

I recently presented on the witness’s perspective of bullying in the workplace at a conference at Shippensburg University, PA. The National Workplace Bullying Coalition hosted the event called “#Dignity15, Restoring and Protecting Dignity at Work: Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying in the Workplace.

The conference was successful, they recorded all of the presentations and they will be put up on the Workplace Bullying Coalition’s website. The presentation I presented was from my study  conducted in 2013, (http://gradworks.umi.com/3570580.pdf) . I referenced that in some cases the witnesses impacts were worst than the actual victims and the health aspects are unreal but believeable. Some will find that hard to believe, but I truly understand and have seen this myself. People think how can you watch and not do anything when a supervisor is slamming your co-worker via humiliation, yelling, cursing, could be throwing things, and telling lies. It’s hard and there are plenty of reasons why. It’s about fear-am I next?, I need my job..the stress, all of this leads to medication, and lack of job satisfaction. One of the participants of the study says “I used to throw up on my way to work, I hated it, I went to the doctor and now on medication for high blood pressure”. Another shared “I work in a toxic environment”.

Organizations do not realize when they allow bullying in the workplace, it is costing them. Most bullying is done by the supervisor or manager. A change needs to come in the workplace, if organizations want to retain and recruit good folks into their organizations they need to change the culture. Now is the time! Join the coalition…it might be coming to your state next. Or visit the http://www.workplacebullying.org

This is a guest post by Willa Hammitt Brown, a doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia, where she is finishing her dissertation, “Gentlemen of the Woods: Manhood, Myth and the American Lumberjack, 1860-1920”. She is a teaching assistant in the Department of History and the Women’s and Gender Studies program.  Content note: this article mentions sexual assault.

“I have worn the honors of Honor

I graduated from Virginia” – :The Honor Men”, James Hay Jr, 1903

“Nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school” – Rolling Stone, 2014

This morning I got an email from the President of my University, the University of Virginia. In it, she quotes Thomas Jefferson, and invokes tradition, honor and idealism. She harks back to the long history of a storied institution. “Honor and tradition inform our thinking,” she explains, but where “success is demanded as much as it is sought” we…

Updates on Workplace Bullying

I just do not understand why we don’t have a law to help the suffering in the US. There is enough stats that show specifically the cost to the organization due to bullying. Is this not something to be concerned about?

What do we need to do to encourage the law makers to pass the healthy workplace bill? What’s your thoughts? Please share them. I would love to have open discussion. Visit the workplace bullying institute webpage to stay abreast of what’s going on:

HBO’s “Getting On” and Workplace Bullying

Coming up-check out HBO’s “Getting on ” and Workplace Bullying

409454_PA_Getting-On_27x40Given the epidemic of toxic workplaces in the healthcare industry it shouldn’t surprise viewers that the second season of HBO’s “Getting On” opened with the topic of workplace bullying front and center in a very sensitive way. As the title implies, the show takes place in a hospice center. Nurse Dawn is being pressured by her superior to help with a research project in addition to her already emotionally overwhelming job tasks.

Dawn’s immediate supervisor, Patsy De La Serda, tries to help her understand the situation she’s in:

“Dawn, I think we both know what it is. It’s Dr. James. You’re in an abusive and toxic relationship with a woman who hates women and she’s taking it out on you. I think you have difficulty maintaining firm boundaries and saying no.”

Dawn responds: “I say no to her all the time even though it’s very hard for me. It’s true that I…

Are Performance Evaluations effective?

Performance evaluations were the topic of discussion for my class. We debated as to the effectiveness and actual purpose. Typically evaluations are completed once or maybe twice a year. Why do we continually look to the past, instead of forward? Each student had to read an article reflective of our topic for the week. This is a good one to read: http://www.forbes.com/sites/adobe/2014/05/29/why-businesses-should-rethink-the-annual-performance-review/

This concerns me about Bullying in the Workplace!

When is it going to stop? People are struggling with what to do. They need options. When are the laws going to be in place to protect the employees from this vicious behavior? Folks just want to go to work and do a good job! Don’t you agree? The workplace is not the place for bullying. Check out this article:
